Sea, air or express? Planning an international shipment
Compare delivery urgency, shipment characteristics and total landed cost before choosing a transport option.
The right shipping method depends on the shipment and the business need. A small sample order and a seasonal inventory replenishment may require very different decisions, even for the same product.
Express: small shipments and urgent samples
Express courier services can simplify smaller deliveries and provide an integrated tracking experience. Check chargeable weight, destination coverage, restrictions and whether duties and taxes are included in the quoted service.
Air freight: speed with more planning
Air freight can be relevant when timing matters and the shipment is larger than a typical courier parcel. Compare airport handling, onward transport and customs arrangements as well as the main freight charge.
Sea freight: plan around the full journey
For suitable volumes, sea freight can offer a different cost profile. Evaluate consolidation, port handling, inland transport and the inventory implications of a longer journey. A quoted sailing time is not the same as door-to-door delivery time.
Compare total cost
Include product packaging, transport, handling, insurance where applicable, import charges and destination delivery. Use consistent trade terms so the quotations cover the same responsibilities.
Work backward from the date that matters
Consider sample approval, production, inspection, booking, transit and customs clearance. Ask providers for current route-specific estimates and leave room for uncertainty. General timing ranges are not a delivery guarantee.
Check restrictions before booking
Batteries, liquids, fragile goods and other product characteristics may affect the available services and documentation. Confirm the exact requirements with the carrier or a qualified logistics provider before making a commitment.
Choose with the inventory plan in view
A split shipment may sometimes balance urgency and replenishment needs. Compare the full options with your expected demand and cash commitment before deciding.
